“If any man preaches to you doctrines contrary to the Bible, the Book of Mormon, or the Book of Doctrine & Covenants, set him down as an imposter. You do not need to write to us to know what you are to do with such men; you have the authority with you. Try them by the principles contained in the acknowledged word of God.”
Times and Seasons, April 1, 1844, Joseph Smith, Editor
“It makes no difference what is written or what anyone has said, if what has been said is in conflict with what the Lord has revealed, we can set it aside. My words, and the teachings of any other member of the Church, high or low, if they do not square with the revelations, we need not accept them. Let us have this matter clear. We have accepted the four standard works as the measuring yardsticks, or balances, by which we measure every man’s doctrine.”
Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation
“He shall be a believer in the Book of Mormon and the revelations I have given unto you, saith the Lord; for that which is more or less than this cometh of evil, and shall be attended with cursings and not blessings.”
Doctrine and Covenants 124:119–120
This blog is simply a repository of my notes and observations as I try to measure various doctrines against the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. I’m confident that I will make mistakes, that my understanding will change over time, and I will be blind to my own false traditions. Be merciful! I don’t claim to be an expert…I’m just trying to measure doctrine against the word of God.
